Turo guest late return message

A late car is two problems at once: you do not know where it is, and the next hour of your day was planned around it being back. The first message is not a lecture. It asks for a place and a time, in the trip thread, so you can decide whether the next guest waits or the trip has to change.

The first message

Send it when the return time on the trip has passed and you do not already have a new time. If they wrote “landing at 4, back by 5” and it is 4:10, you are early. If it is 40 minutes past the trip end and the thread is quiet, you are not.

Keep the whole conversation in the Turo trip messages. A text to their personal number splits the record, and a promise made off the trip is harder to line up with whatever Turo’s late-return process does. Check Turo’s help center for how late returns work right now. Do not type a dollar amount in the chat unless you have checked those guidelines and the fee is being handled on the trip.

Ask two things: where the car is, and what time it will be in the return spot. One question they can answer from the driver’s seat is enough. The day-before return note, if you sent one, is in the Turo guest message templates. This message is for when that time has already slipped.

Return time has passed

Hi [Guest first name], the [Car] was due back at [Return time] at [Return spot]. Can you tell me where it is and what time you’ll have it there? Please reply in this thread.

When they are close

A guest who is twenty minutes out, with the car in one piece, is a different problem from a guest who has gone quiet. If the lot is empty after them, say the new time back so you both have it in the thread. Ask for the dashboard photo when they park, not while they are in traffic.

If you are meeting the car, say whether you will still be there or whether they should use the lockbox as planned. Do not make them hunt for you and the box.

They are close

Thanks for the update. [New time] at [Return spot] works. Please send a photo of the dashboard, fuel and miles, once you’re parked, and [lock the car and put the key back in the lockbox / I’ll meet you there].

When someone else needs the car

If another trip starts soon, the late guest needs a clock, not a mood. Tell them the car has to be back by a time you can still turn it around: fuel, a look around, the spot the next person was given. Do not name the next guest or their flight. “The car is booked after you” is enough.

Then message the incoming guest with what you actually know. “The car is on the way back, I’ll confirm when it is in the spot” is fair. “It’ll be ready at 2” is not, unless the late guest has already said a time you believe. If you have to move the next pickup, do that as a change on the trip, in the app, so the reservation matches the plan.

If the late guest stops answering and the next trip cannot start, follow whatever late-return steps Turo’s current host guidelines describe, still inside the trip. Do not invent a side charge in the messages.

The next trip is waiting

Hi [Guest first name], I need the [Car] back at [Return spot] by [Hard time]. It is booked after your trip. Please reply with where you are and whether you can make that time. If you need longer, send an extension in the app and I’ll look, but I may not be able to approve it.

When they want to keep it

“Can I just bring it back tonight?” is an extension. A yes in the chat does not change the end time on the trip, and it does not tell the next guest the car is gone. Have them send the extension in the Turo app. Accept it there only if the car is free, including the gap you need before the following booking. How to answer yes, no, and a shorter yes is in the Turo trip extension message guide.

If you cannot extend, say that, and repeat the return spot and the time. Offer the app so the request is decided on the trip, not only in a paragraph. Stay polite. People run late because of flights and traffic, and a sharp message does not move a car that is still on the highway.

The other return and pickup notes are on the guides for Turo hosts.

They want to keep the car

I can’t change the return time from this chat. Please send an extension request in the Turo app for the time you want, and I’ll accept or decline it there. Until that’s approved, the [Car] is still due at [Return spot] at [Return time]. Message me here if you’re on the way.

Questions hosts ask

When should I message a guest who is late? When the return time on the trip has passed and you do not already have a new time from them. Ask where the car is and when it will be back. Keep it in the Turo trip messages.

Should I name a late fee in the message? Do not type a dollar amount unless you have checked Turo’s current host guidelines and the fee is being handled on the trip. A number in the chat is easy to argue about later. Check Turo’s help center for how late returns work today.

What if they want to keep the car instead of hurrying back? That is an extension, not a favor in the thread. Have them send the request in the Turo app. Accept it only if the car is actually free, including the time you need before the next trip.

What if the next guest is already on the way? Tell the late guest the car has to be back by a specific time, and ask for that time in the trip messages. Do not share the next guest’s name or plans. Tell the next guest only what you know about when the car will be there.
